KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — The celebration that poured onto the Neyland Stadium turf after Tennessee beat Alabama on Saturday in Knoxville comes with a bill. Under Southeastern Conference rules, the university is in line for a $500,000 fine because fans rushed the field.

The Vols won 26-10 in front of a sellout crowd of 101,915, close to the stadium’s listed capacity of 102,455. The win lifted Tennessee to 6-1 overall and 3-1 in league play, while Alabama fell to 5-2 and 3-2.

The SEC has penalized field storming since 2004. Its original policy scaled up with each violation, starting at $100,000 for a school’s first offense, rising to $250,000 for a second and reaching $500,000 for every one after that.

That changed in 2025, when Commissioner Greg Sankey announced a single flat penalty of $500,000 no matter how many times a school had been fined before. Sankey argued at the time that a rush onto the field is the same event whether it is a school’s first or its 18th, and that the visiting team feels it the same way either way.

It is a familiar scene in Knoxville against this opponent. Vols fans did the same thing after wins over the Crimson Tide in 2022 and 2024, so Saturday made it three field rushes after the last three home victories in the series.

Neyland Stadium sits on the University of Tennessee campus, which covers about 910 acres along the south bank of the Tennessee River, and the Vols play their home football games there on fall Saturdays. The conference fine goes to the school, not to individual fans who ran onto the turf.
