KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — The celebration on the Neyland Stadium turf in Knoxville after Tennessee knocked off Alabama on Saturday is going to cost the university half a million dollars.

The Southeastern Conference announced that Tennessee broke the league’s access to competition area policy when fans poured onto the field after the game on Oct. 17. Under conference rules, the $500,000 penalty goes to Alabama, the visiting team.

The amount is the flat figure the SEC now charges for every violation. When the league first adopted a field-storming policy in 2004, fines climbed with each offense, starting at $100,000, rising to $250,000 for a second and reaching $500,000 for each one after that. In 2025, SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey said every offense would carry the same $500,000 fine, arguing that rushing the field is the same act whether it is a school’s first time or its 18th.

This is not new territory for Tennessee fans. Crowds rushed the turf when the Vols took down Alabama in 2022, and the scene repeated itself two years later after another win over the Crimson Tide in 2024.

Saturday’s game drew a sellout crowd of 101,915 to Neyland Stadium, which seats 102,455 for football. The win moved Tennessee to 6-1 overall and 3-1 in SEC play, while Alabama fell to 5-2 and 3-2 in the conference.

The payment goes from the university to Alabama in line with the conference policy, and the 910-acre Tennessee campus along the south bank of the Tennessee River has now seen fans rush the field after three Alabama wins since 2022.
