The University of Tennessee Medical Hospital (UTMC) is a Knoxville-based academic medical center that acts as a referral center for East Tennessee, Kentucky, and North Carolina. UTMC’s residency and medical student education is overseen by the University of Tennessee Graduate School of Medicine (UTGSM). UTMC is a recognized center for primary stroke, biomedical imaging, adult and pediatric transplantation, pediatric dialysis, and kidney failure, in addition to being a Level I Trauma Center. Eastern Tennessee’s first specialized heart hospital opened in 2010 at UTMC.

The University of Tennessee Memorial Hospital first opened its doors on August 7, 1956. By the 1960s, the hospital had expanded its research, patient care, and resident training facilities. The University of Tennessee Board of Trustees approved the training of 20 senior medical students from the University of Tennessee College of Medicine at UTMC in 1971. With the construction of the Boling Pavilion, the adoption of the area’s first emergency response helicopter (Lifestar), and other speciality improvements, the hospital saw technological advancements in the 1980s. The UT Board of Trustees designated University Memorial Hospital and the UT Graduate School of Medicine, respectively, the hospital’s principal missions of patient care and medical teaching in 1991.  The Heart Hospital is currently undergoing expansion, with plans to add roughly 50 beds.
