KNOXVILLE, Tennessee – Important Safety Reminder for Residents

Hey there, Knoxville! We’ve got some important news that we need to share to keep everyone safe. It’s always good to remind ourselves about the things we sometimes take for granted, especially when it comes to our safety and well-being.

Recently, there was a reported incident that has raised some eyebrows in our lovely Fort Sanders neighborhood. The Knoxville Police Department (KPD) is shedding light on an incident that happened early Sunday morning, September 22, 2024. A 22-year-old woman reported that she was approached by a man who offered her a ride home under some alarming circumstances.

A Cautionary Tale

Picture this: it was around 4:20 a.m. when the young woman was walking back to her apartment. At this hour, not many people are out and about, and that can make you feel vulnerable. Enter a man in a vehicle who claimed to be an Uber driver, saying he had just finished his shift and was willing to offer her a free ride. Sounds harmless, right? However, things took a very dark turn once she got into the car.

Once inside, the situation escalated. The man reportedly assaulted her, pushed her out of the vehicle, and sped off. Thankfully, she managed to reach the police and report the incident. The KPD is now actively searching for answers and investigating this shocking event.

Keep Your Guard Up

The police department wants to remind everyone to be extremely cautious about who you trust to give you a ride. The safest option is to never get into a car with someone you don’t know. The KPD has a strong message: always verify your rideshare driver’s identification before hopping in. This means checking the car’s license plate, the driver’s name, and even their photo if possible. Your safety is worth it!

According to the victim’s description, the suspect was possibly of Middle Eastern descent, had a heavier build, and was driving a white SUV—though the make was not identified. If you’ve had a similar experience or have any information regarding the incident, please reach out to KPD’s Special Crimes Unit at 865-215-6810 or contact East Tennessee Valley Crime Stoppers at 865-215-7165. Every little bit helps, and together we can ensure our community remains safe.

Staying Informed

It’s crucial to stay informed on these matters, especially as we move into the various seasons of the year when people are out more and socializing. Remember, being cautious doesn’t mean you can’t have fun—it just means being smart about it!

This is still a developing story, and we encourage everyone to stay alert to updates. You can also download apps or sign up for email alerts from your local news sources to keep track of safety news as it unfolds. It’s a great way to stay informed about what’s happening in your community.

Let’s all look out for each other, Knoxville. Feel free to pass along this information to friends and family to ensure everyone stays aware and safe. We’re all in this together!
