Electric vehicle charging stations in Knoxville, Tennessee

News Summary

Knoxville has become the first city in Tennessee to adopt the Charging Smart program, aimed at boosting electric vehicle usage. With 40 public EV chargers and more on the way, Knoxville is committed to reducing local emissions and enhancing its EV infrastructure. The city’s endeavor is augmented by the establishment of an international engineering company’s North American headquarters, which promises new tech jobs. As Knoxville expands its charging station network, it reinforces its dedication to sustainability and community development.

Knoxville Takes the Lead in Electric Vehicle Adoption

Exciting news, Knoxville! This city has recently become the first in Tennessee to hop on board the Charging Smart program, a fantastic initiative designed to boost the adoption of electric vehicles (EVs) in communities across the state. This program aims to help cities establish a foundation for equitable and widespread EV usage, making it easier for everyone to go green!

What is Charging Smart?

The Charging Smart program is a new technical assistance initiative funded by none other than the U.S. Department of Energy’s Vehicle Technologies Office. It’s specifically tailored to support communities in their quest for greater EV adoption. Knoxville’s entry into this program was bolstered by the efforts of Drive Electric Tennessee, acting as the state liaison. What a team effort!

Knoxville’s Charge Infrastructure

Currently, Knoxville boasts 40 public EV chargers scattered across 14 city-owned locations, including some prime spots like parking garages, public parks, and municipal buildings. But wait, there’s more! An additional 30 charging slots are being added in the City-County Building garage. Talk about committing to sustainability!

Reducing Emissions One Charge at a Time

Knoxville’s mission to enhance its electric vehicle infrastructure is fueled by a desire to reduce community emissions. With transportation contributing a whopping 59% to local emissions, diversifying the vehicle fleet has never been more crucial. The city is not just playing around; it has made significant investments in EV chargers to meet ambitious sustainability and air quality goals. Knoxville’s leaders understand that supporting residents and visitors who drive electric vehicles is essential for a greener future.

EV Ready City Fleet

Knoxville is already ahead of the game with a municipal fleet consisting of 40 EV vehicles used by various city departments, including our beloved Fire and Police services. For drivers in the area, finding a charging station is easier than ever thanks to resources provided by the DOE Alternative Fuels Data Center, PlugShare, and ChargeHub. Charging up on-the-go has never been simpler!

Tech Jobs Coming to Knoxville

North American headquarters. This move is expected to generate high-paying, high-tech jobs for local residents, with plans to create at least 30 jobs and expand up to over 100 engineers over the next four years. Salaries start at an impressive $70,000 and can rise based on experience.

Charging Stations on the Fast Track

Knoxville is stepping up its game with newly installed fast EV charging stations along Central Street. Collaborating with KUB and TVA, four fast-charging ports have been installed as part of the Fast Charge Tennessee Network. Each charger is capable of delivering up to 150 kilowatts per vehicle at a reasonable cost of 0.40 cents per kilowatt-hour. And, as part of a bigger plan, the city is working towards having charging stations located every 50 miles along the interstate and major highways throughout Tennessee.

Community Development and Public Amenities

As exciting changes unfold, Knoxville residents might notice some disruptions due to ongoing construction involving new public art installations. While this might affect pedestrian accessibility for a while, it’s all in the name of progress! Rest assured, the city is taking steps to minimize the removal of mature trees while developing its parks. New features are on the way to create engaging public spaces that celebrate Knoxville’s musical heritage.

There’s a lot to look forward to in Knoxville as it continues to invest in sustainable transportation and community development. The future is looking bright – and electric!
