Knoxville is buzzing with excitement as the Winter Farmers Market makes its much-anticipated return!

This weekend, the Nourish Knoxville Winter Farmers Market will open its doors to the community, providing a delightful space for local vendors to showcase their amazing produce and goods. Mark your calendars! The market kicks off on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and will operate every Saturday until March. The lively atmosphere will take place at Market Square in the heart of downtown Knoxville.

Exciting Activities for Kids!

This opening weekend is particularly special as it features the exciting Nourish Kids program. Kids will get a fantastic chance to learn about bicycle safety and maintenance, allowing them to learn while being active and engaged. Plus, participating children will receive $5 in produce bucks that can be spent on fresh fruits and veggies at the market!

An Abundance of Local Goods

Shopping at the market means you’re supporting local! All vendors at the market grow, raise, or make their products within a 150-mile radius of Knoxville. You can expect a delightful variety of seasonal offerings that showcase the great flavors of the region. From fresh vegetables to artisanal goods, there’s something for everyone!

Support on Connections and Accessibility

The market is dedicated to making fresh local produce accessible year-round. To ensure everyone has the opportunity to join in, the market offers SNAP benefits and SNAP Doubling services on each market day. Moreover, space at the market has expanded this year, now that the winter ice rink has been taken down. This will allow for more vendors—up to fifty-seven—to set up shop compared to last year’s approximately thirty!

Safety First!

In addition to the delicious food options, the market is taking health and safety seriously. Hand sanitizer and disposable masks will be available for everyone shopping at the market. Most vendors accept credit cards, but some may prefer cash, so it’s a good idea to be prepared. If you need cash, there are ATMs located nearby, and you can also purchase tokens for transactions to simplify the process!

Community Impact and Local Vendors

The opening weekend is expected to attract an even larger crowd than last year’s debut, which brought in around 550 guests. This year’s turnout is anticipated to surpass that, creating a vibrant community gathering. Local vendors will bring their best to the table, with Old Bailey Farms and Whoa Doggie Hot Sauces among those expected to showcase their products.

Old Bailey Farms is a longstanding family business with over a century of history in beef cattle and honey production. Meanwhile, Whoa Doggie, founded in October 2023 by a husband-and-wife team, is already making its mark with flavorful hot sauces. Both these businesses not only prioritize local sourcing but also embody the spirit of family-run enterprises, offering a personal touch to their products.

Facing Challenges and Looking Ahead

Like many local businesses, both Old Bailey Farms and Whoa Doggie encounter unique challenges regarding production due to environmental factors and navigating the market. Old Bailey Farms is even considering expanding their honeybee operations to promote sustainability while Whoa Doggie is looking to build brand awareness with aspirations for national recognition.

This weekend’s Winter Farmers Market promises to be more than just a shopping experience. It’s an opportunity to connect with local farmers, support family-run businesses, and enjoy the fresh flavors of Knoxville. Come out, see your neighbors, and grab some delicious local food!
