Knoxville Takes Big Steps to Tackle Homelessness and Housing Woes

In the heart of the Appalachian Mountains, Knoxville is stepping up its game against homelessness! The City of Knoxville Housing and Neighborhood Development Department has kicked off a grant program aimed at providing essential support to nonprofits working tirelessly to combat homelessness and housing challenges in the community. Applications for this funding opportunity opened on Friday, and it’s time for local organizations to get involved!

Funding with a Purpose

The city is pulling from a couple of important sources for this grant program. There’s the Community Development Block Program, which is part of the U.S. Department of Housing & Urban Development’s efforts to boost community living. Alongside that, we’ve got the Homeless Grants Program which gets a boost from a mix of federal and local city dollars. This funding will play a significant role in reducing or preventing homelessness while also helping out folks who fall into the low and moderate-income brackets.

What Do You Need to Apply?

Attention potential applicants! There’s a little catch—before you can apply, you must attend a technical workshop to go over the details. This is a chance to learn all about the two specific programs available for funding applications: the Homeless Grants Program and the CDBG Program. Mark your calendars! The applications are due by February 21 at 4:30 p.m., so make sure to get your ducks in a row ahead of that deadline.

Community Voices Matter!

late spring 2025.

Why Is This Important?

56% since early 2020. In fact, a whopping 72% of those experiencing homelessness noted eviction, lack of affordable housing, or job-related issues as the main culprits behind their situation.

Mental Health and Community Support

Further Opportunities for Input

September 4 and September 10, meaning there’s still time to share your thoughts and ideas!

Looking Forward

January 28, with a draft consolidated plan expected to make its debut in April. This will build upon Knoxville’s previous five-year consolidated plan that spanned from 2019 to 2024.

Future Visions

$8 million for the development of new rental options. Advocates, like Justice Knox, are aiming for what’s called “functional zero homelessness” for certain populations—essentially working toward having fewer people experiencing homelessness than there are available resources. It’s a bold goal, but every step counts!

In conclusion, Knoxville is tackling homelessness head-on with this new grant program and community involvement efforts. By working together, the city hopes to create a supportive environment for everyone—because who doesn’t want to see a happier, more secure Knoxville?
