Exciting Changes in Knoxville’s Schools and Adjacent Celebrations!

Hey there, Knoxville! We’ve got some eye-catching updates from our vibrant community that we can’t wait to share with you. A wave of change is on the horizon for Knox County Schools as Chief Jason Periard announces his departure. It’s bittersweet news since Chief Periard has been at the helm of school security since August 2021. He brought his skills from a distinguished military background and over 15 years of security management in bustling Los Angeles.

Starting November 1, Becky Wuethrich will step in as the interim chief of security. For those who might not know, Wuethrich is no stranger to the Knox County scene. With nearly 40 years of fruitful service under her belt, she has been a key player in various capacities, including manager of discipline and investigations for Knox County Schools since 2011. Superintendent Dr. Jon Rysewyk expressed confidence in her ability to transition seamlessly, citing her strong ties to law enforcement and school security personnel. It’s reassuring news as the school district gears up for a national search for a permanent leader in security.

Let’s take a moment to spotlight Wuethrich’s remarkable background, shall we? She kick-started her career with the Metropolitan Planning Commission, later contributing to the Knox County Codes Administration and the Knox County Law Director’s Office. Plus, she has maintained a bond with the Knox County Sheriff’s Office for over 20 years! So, rest assured, she knows her stuff. Her professional training includes sessions with the FBI-LEEDA Command Leadership Institute and the Department of Children Services, making her well-equipped to keep our schools safe.

A Calm Space for Students

Speaking of schools, Pleasant Ridge Elementary, located at 3013 Walnoaks Road, is buzzing with excitement over its newly unveiled sensory room. With a generous grant of $35,000 from BlueCare TN, this 416-square-foot room has finally come to life! Principal Jennifer Morrell is thrilled to announce that today, October 24, at 5:30 p.m., the community is invited to the grand reveal. The event will take a brief pause for the kindergarten and first-grade musical program but will reopen for an additional 30 minutes. Make sure to pop in before 7:30 p.m. to check out this calming space designed to help both students and staff.

Now, you might be wondering, what exactly is a sensory room? They’re specially designed spaces catering to individuals needing a little extra tranquility—a fantastic addition to any school setting!

New Playground Celebration in Karns

Meanwhile, over in Karns at 8109 Beaver Ridge Road, there’s also a celebration on the agenda. Karns Preschool is hosting a media event today at noon to unveil their shiny new playground! Principal Jason Harris invites everyone to join in on the fun as they mark this exciting milestone. It’s such moments that remind us how vital play is for our little ones.

Lunch with the Superintendent

Not too long ago, Dr. Jon Rysewyk had a lunch meet-up at Southern Kitchen Sandwich Co. with some locals. The atmosphere was lively, with Major Ward and his son, Cameron, adding to the chatter as crowds filled the eatery. While Rysewyk did not make any public announcements, he took the time to engage with diners, privately discussing plans with some tables about school improvements. One notable point was that Powell Elementary School is currently absent from the school system’s five-year capital improvement plan (CIP). It’s clear that as the budget unfolds, many are eager to advocate for the needs and enhancements of our local schools.

As we dive deeper into the 2024-25 budget’s 136 pages, we’ll be keeping our eyes peeled for projects on the CIP and advocating for the exciting changes our schools deserve, especially for Powell. This is all for a good cause—to ensure our schools can thrive and provide the best environment for our children’s education.

As we navigate through these changes and celebrations, let’s continue to support one another and nurture our schools because our community’s future is worth every effort!
