Clinton Welcomes $1 Million Donation to Boost Local Chamber Headquarters
Good news is buzzing around Clinton as local businessman William “Bear” Stephenson has announced a generous donation of $1 million to the Anderson County Chamber Foundation. This donation comes as part of the ongoing efforts to build a new Chamber headquarters in the community that has supported him for nearly 43 years as the owner of Stephenson Realty and Auction.
A Legacy of Support
Stephenson’s contribution is more than just a large check; it’s also a heartfelt tribute to his family, particularly his late parents and brother, who played significant roles in his life. Reflecting on his journey, Stephenson expressed his gratitude for the community that has uplifted him along the way. The Anderson County Chamber has been a cornerstone for local businesses, including Stephenson’s own venture that opened back in 1982.
Rick Meredith, president and CEO of the Chamber, announced the groundbreaking of the new headquarters with much enthusiasm. “Bear Stephenson made this new Chamber building possible for us when he committed to becoming a major donor at the start of the fund drive,” Meredith shared during the ceremony. “This building will stand as his family’s legacy and reflects his unwavering belief in the Chamber’s impact over its first 90 years.”
Groundbreaking Ceremony
On what they casually referred to as “Groundbreaking 2.0,” community members gathered to mark the occasion at a prime location: a 1.35-acre tract at the corner of North Charles G. Seivers Boulevard and West Weaver Street. This new site is particularly exciting since it will be the first Chamber-owned building in its 92-year history, moving away from the rental offices they have occupied since their inception.
Stephenson recalled how pivotal the Chamber was when he started his real estate business, helping him to network, promote his services, and ultimately thrive. “The Chamber is a vital part of economic development in our community,” he emphasized, showing how much he values the organization’s role in supporting local growth.
A New Era for the Chamber
At this groundbreaking event, Joe Hollingsworth Jr., CEO of The Hollingsworth Companies, was recognized for donating the land for the new headquarters, highlighting the community spirit that makes Clinton truly special. Hollingsworth said he was motivated to contribute because of the successful fundraising efforts led by the Chamber.
The plans for the new headquarters include modern offices, state-of-the-art training and meeting facilities, and a welcoming lobby area that enhances the Chamber’s ability to serve its members and the community at large. This facility will not only house Chamber offices but also provide spaces for various activities and programs.
The Future of The Chamber
Stephenson, who has never married and lost his immediate family, shared his vision for the future: “I’m leaving it to the future of Clinton and Anderson County.” His philanthropic spirit defies traditional inheritance norms, focusing instead on enriching the community for generations to come.
The one-story Chamber headquarters will also feature a catering kitchen for events and a diversified room equipped with the latest technology for training and videoconferencing. MBI Companies Inc. has been engaged for architectural design and project management, assisting the Chamber in creating a functional and inviting space for all.
Get Involved!
As part of the “Building a Better Future” capital campaign, the Anderson County Chamber Foundation continues to seek funds to complete the project. The Foundation offers community members a chance to contribute by purchasing laser-engraved bricks that will pave the walkway to the new headquarters, allowing names, tributes, and company logos to become a part of this exciting new landmark.
For those interested in contributing to the campaign, more information can be obtained through the Foundation’s website or by contacting the Chamber office directly. With a shared goal of fostering economic growth and community connections, the partnership between local businesses and the Chamber is stronger than ever!
This $1 million donation isn’t just a drop in the bucket; it’s a ripple effect of goodwill that will impact Clinton and Anderson County for many years to come.
