Knoxville – A new, family-friendly scavenger hunt titled “Newts in Knoxville” will launch on June 6, encouraging children and families to explore downtown Knoxville while searching for life-sized bronze newt sculptures hidden in various locations throughout the area. The scavenger hunt is a free event that will be accessible to the public 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Participants will embark on an adventure to locate a total of 12 bronze newt sculptures strategically placed in popular spots such as Gay Street, Market Square, Krutch Park, and Strong Alley. The project was developed collaboratively by the Downtown Knoxville Alliance and Zoo Knoxville, with the sculptures designed and installed by local artist Preston Farabow.

The “Newts in Knoxville” scavenger hunt is inspired by popular treasure hunts like “Where’s Waldo?” and “Elf on the Shelf.” It aims to engage families in outdoor exploration, offering a fun way to learn about local wildlife and biodiversity. The Eastern Newt, which has been selected as the central figure in this hunt, is significant to the Southern Appalachian region, known for being home to the highest diversity of salamander species in the world.

The scavenger hunt is designed to be completed in approximately 30 to 45 minutes. Clues and hints to help participants locate the sculptures can be found in a passport available at the Mast General Store and the Visit Knoxville Visitors Center. This engaging activity is intended for people of all ages, making it suitable for families, tourists, and locals alike.

As part of the scavenger hunt initiative, local businesses are encouraged to create newt-themed products and promotions to enhance community involvement during the event. The goal of the scavenger hunt is not only to provide entertainment but also to promote awareness of biodiversity and the local ecosystems.

Salamanders, including newts, are facing increasing threats from habitat destruction, climate change, pollution, and disease. This scavenger hunt seeks to emphasize the importance of respecting wildlife and understanding the human impact on ecosystems. Through family interaction and enjoyment, the event aims to foster a greater appreciation for nature and its preservation.

The official kickoff for the “Newts in Knoxville” scavenger hunt will coincide with the First Friday ArtWalk on June 6, further integrating cultural experiences into the adventure. As the event unfolds, it is anticipated that it will not only draw residents but also attract tourists eager to explore the unique artistic and natural offerings that downtown Knoxville has to provide.

For those interested in participating, the scavenger hunt provides a convenient and engaging method to enjoy the outdoors while discovering the local art scene and learning about environmental conservation efforts. The combination of exploration, education, and entertainment offers a comprehensive experience that highlights the beauty of downtown Knoxville and its rich biodiversity.
