Powell Says Goodbye to a Beloved Community Leader
In the heart of Powell, Tennessee, friends and family are coming together to honor the life of Mary Evelyn Rogers Sexton, who passed away on November 16, 2024, at the age of 74. Evelyn was much more than just a name in the community; she was a vibrant force of love and compassion, beloved by all who knew her. Her funeral service is set for this Sunday, November 24, 2024, at Temple Baptist Church, marking a poignant farewell for a woman who dedicated her life to serving others.
A Life of Service and Partnership
Evelyn’s journey began in Maryville, Tennessee, where she was raised by her mother, Lucille Rogers Caughron, following the early death of her father when she was just five years old. Growing up in a pastor’s family, Evelyn developed a deep-rooted faith and a passion for community service. It was during her high school years at Everett High School that she met the love of her life, Rev. Dr. Clarence Sexton. The couple tied the knot on February 15, 1967, and together, they became a powerful team in the ministry.
For more than five decades, Evelyn and Clarence were partners in faith, serving at churches across Tennessee and even in Paterson, New Jersey. They co-founded The Crown College in Powell, which has been instrumental in training future leaders of faith and community. Their bond was not just one of marriage but also of shared purpose. Evelyn often spoke about her role in supporting her husband’s calling to the ministry, emphasizing the importance of unity in marriage.
Remembering a Loving Family Member
Evelyn leaves behind a legacy of love, as she is survived by her two sons, Shannon and Matthew, along with their families. These personal connections were central to her life’s work, as she believed that family was one of the greatest blessings one could have. She poured her heart into caring for her loved ones, sharing laughter, joy, and faith to strengthen their bonds.
