Road Work Planned for East TN August 2-7: What to Know

Knoxville, Tenn. — Buckle up, drivers! East Tennessee is set for a slew of road work that might impact your travel plans this weekend. Here’s a detailed look at what to expect and how to navigate the upcoming construction zones.

I-40 West and I-640 West Ramp Repair
Starting traffic on I-40 West exiting to I-640 West (Exit 393) will be squeezed down to just one lane. Crews will be working tirelessly on bridge repairs over Rutledge Pike, and this could cause delays. The lane reduction will remain in place 24/7 and is expected to wrap up weather permitting. Make sure to plan your routes accordingly to avoid long waits.

Alcoa Highway (US 129/State Route 115)
Watch out for roadblocks on Alcoa Highway between Woodson Drive and Cherokee Trail. The closures will take place from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. This is to allow crews to move equipment and perform rock excavation and clearing activities. Expect flagging operations on the ramp at the traffic signal at Cherokee Trail and along Cherokee Trail itself. Allow yourself some extra time for these detours.

Old Knoxville Highway Extension
Wet weather has pushed back the planned work on Old Knoxville Highway. Single-lane closures are now set from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Make sure to drive carefully and look for signs directing traffic around the work zones.

Knoxville Street Paving
The city of Knoxville is gearing up for another round of street paving in early August. Although specific streets have not been announced, it’s always smart to anticipate some temporary inconvenience as crews work to improve our roads.

Gay Street Bridge Status
One long-term disruption to keep in mind is the ongoing closure of the Gay Street Bridge. Closed since June 25, officials are still awaiting a final inspection report. Keep checking for updates on when it might reopen to traffic.

Gatlinburg Sewer Line Rehabilitation
In Gatlinburg, portions of Reagan Drive are shut down for an “intensive project” aimed at rehabilitating the sewer lines under the road. Drivers are advised to find alternate routes to avoid getting stuck in traffic bottlenecks.

So, East Tennessee drivers, stay informed and stay safe! If you have any specific questions about road work in your area, make sure to reach out to local authorities.

Safe travels, everyone!
