Knoxville Embraces New Frontiers in Education
Exciting things are happening in Knoxville as the University of Tennessee (UT) takes strides to prepare students for the rapidly evolving technological landscape. The newly established College of Emerging and Collaborative Studies, which is now in its second year, has just unveiled three brand new degree programs this summer. These programs include Data Science, Applied Artificial Intelligence, and Innovative Transdisciplinary Studies. Dean Ozlem Kilic expressed her delight, calling it a “mini miracle” to roll out these degrees so quickly.
A Vision for the Future
Kilic explained that the college’s approach is unique. “We’re creating a platform for students to explore how emerging technologies intertwine with various fields of study,” she said. This means that students from diverse disciplines like humanities, engineering, or music can gain insights into how artificial intelligence can enhance their work. “What we created here is a shell that all students at UT can utilize,” Kilic added.
But that’s not all! As part of this innovative venture, the college has brought five adorable robotic dogs to campus. These furry companions, created by Unitree, utilize artificial intelligence to foster companionship and are also part of students’ research projects. How fun is that?
Engagement and Excitement
Students are clearly buzzing with enthusiasm. Enrollment in artificial intelligence courses has skyrocketed by almost 300% compared to last year, while cyber courses have seen a staggering quadrupling in enrollment. Data courses, on the other hand, have enjoyed a 34% growth. As of now, 34 students have declared majors within the college, and with five full-time faculty members and 10 faculty fellows now on board, the college is definitely growing.
“(Students) are excited about such a college. It’s a fresh breath of air, a very unique way of doing higher education,” Kilic noted. She added that this program is a great complement to traditional education, responding to the evolving needs of today’s college students.
Collaborative Dynamics
The genesis of this innovative college dates back to 2019 when Kilic, then an associate dean, began collaborating with deans from different disciplines. What started as a conversation on a data science degree quickly blossomed into a full-fledged program. By July 2023, the college officially opened, with the innovative course, Innovative Transdisciplinary Studies 101, serving as its flagship offering. This course encourages students to explore the intersection of their skills and passions, leading them toward fulfilling careers.
The Innovative Transdisciplinary Studies degree incorporates several certificates, allowing students to mix and match their interests across various fields. There are currently eight certificates available, and Kilic aims to introduce eight more in the upcoming year. She stressed the significance of partnership with other colleges on campus, stating, “When we launch a certificate, we cultivate collaboration across the entire campus.”
Looking Ahead
As the college prepares for its future, campus leaders are set to meet on October 3 to discuss six potential new programs. Enhancing the college’s online presence is also in focus, with plans for students to earn online certificates. Kilic emphasized that degree programs will follow once the college is well-established in the online space.
“This is happening for the benefit of our students,” Kilic mentioned, expressing her commitment to ensuring they are well-prepared for their careers after graduating from UT. “We’re having conversations to make our intentions clear and ensure the success of our students in rewarding careers, no matter what college they graduate from.”
As Knoxville thrives with these educational advancements, students and faculty alike seem ready to embrace the future with open arms. Exciting times lie ahead at the University of Tennessee!
