A tragic accident on Interstate 40 in Knoxville has left one man dead and another man injured following a single vehicle rollover crash on the night of August 8, 2024. Emergency services responded to the scene around 11:40 PM after reports identified the crash location between Midway Road and Strawberry Plains Pike.

Details of the Incident

According to authorities from the Knoxville Police Department (KPD), the incident occurred when a vehicle rolled over after possibly crossing the median from the westbound lanes. Officers at the scene discovered that the driver, a 26-year-old man, had been ejected from the car during the rollover, and he was subsequently struck by a tractor-trailer, which was no longer present when the police arrived.

In addition to the driver, there was also a passenger in the vehicle. This male passenger was taken to a local hospital but fortunately sustained injuries that were not considered life-threatening. The identities of both men have not yet been disclosed as the families are still being notified.

Family Pet Found Safe

After the crash, KPD learned that the family’s dog was inside the vehicle during the accident. The white Husky named Oden managed to escape the wreckage and ran away from the scene, prompting officers to search the immediate area for the pet.

Fortunately, a couple of hours later, around 12:40 PM the following day, KPD announced that they had found Oden safe and that he was back home with his family. The quick recovery of the dog provided a small ray of hope amid the tragedy affecting the human victims.

The Knoxville Police Department is continuing to investigate the rollover crash, including how the vehicle managed to cross the median and the factors contributing to the severity of the incident.
