Fountain City celebrated its annual Honor Fountain City Day last week at Fountain City Park, despite facing inclement weather conditions. The event, which attracted hundreds of participants, took place against a backdrop of rain, bringing together community members and local leaders to honor veterans and recognize local contributions.

Despite the wet conditions, attendees, equipped with folding chairs, rain hats, and umbrellas, enjoyed a range of activities. The park was filled with families, vendors, political candidates, and displays from various community groups throughout the day. Renowned local musical groups provided entertainment, including live performances from the Fountain City Ramblers, the Knoxville Pipes and Drums, and the Knoxville Wind Symphony Jazz Band.

As part of the ceremonies, Boy Scout Troop 55 presented the flag, engaging the crowd during the national anthem. Keynotes were delivered by local officials, including Mayor Indya Kincannon and Councilwoman Lauren Rider, who addressed the importance of community and remembrance. The event also featured awards honoring local contributors, presented by FCTH Chair Joyce Lee.

A number of individuals were recognized for their outstanding service to the community. Amelia and Scott Hodges received the Residential Landscaping award, while Daniel and Dana Kembel were awarded the Residential Restoration award. Grace Mears, representing Skin Bar Medispa, was acknowledged with the Commercial Restoration award. Additionally, Gracie Alward was honored as the Friend of Fountain City, and Andy LeGrand, director of the Fountain City Art Center, was named Person of the Year.

Adding to the day’s activities, two horse patrols from the Knoxville Police Department paraded through the park, delighting attendees with their impressive display. Local elected officials and city council candidates used this opportunity to engage with community members, fostering a sense of connection and cooperation among residents.

The event concluded with a heartfelt performance by the East Tennessee Veterans Honor Guard, which included a 21-gun salute and the playing of “Taps” to honor fallen heroes. This solemn tribute underscored the day’s themes of remembrance and gratitude for the sacrifices made by veterans.

Honor Fountain City Day in the Park has been a cherished tradition since 1975, with the exception of cancellations during the COVID pandemic. Organized by the Fountain City Town Hall, the event aims to foster community spirit while ensuring that the contributions of local heroes are remembered and celebrated. In addition to the ceremonies and music, there were activities for children, including train rides and a variety of food vendors catering to diverse tastes.

This year’s Honor Fountain City Day successfully brought together residents, families, and local leaders, emphasizing unity and community pride even in the face of challenging weather conditions. The event remains a significant occasion for Fountain City, reflecting the deep connections forged among its residents and highlighting the importance of honoring those who have served the nation.
