The Knoxville Community Band concluded their summer concert series with a touching farewell to their longtime director, Larry Hicks. After serving 14 years as the director and numerous more as a player in the band, Hicks has decided to hang up his baton.
“I’ve committed myself for 67 years to music. It’s going to be feel odd not having the pressures of performance because I’ve lived that all my life,” said Hicks. During his tenure, Hicks has been more than a director; he has been a mentor and an inspiration to many. His leaving marks the end of an era for the Knoxville Community Band.
His bandmates spoke highly of him, emphasizing the profound impact he had on their lives. “He’s been a mentor and an inspiration,” said trombonist Richard Vonhatten. “And most of all, and probably most importantly, a really good friend of mine and I have thoroughly enjoyed playing in the band under his direction.”
Flute and Piccolo player Laurie Pollard added, “He encourages everyone to be better, so not only within the band, but also outside of it.”
Facing Hicks’ departure, the band now faces the challenge of finding a new director who can match his legacy. “I hope we can get somebody who’s at least almost as good a director as Larry was,” said Vonhatten. Pollard noted that Hicks’ influence extended beyond present members. “There are people here that were in the band before, and they left for whatever reasons, and they came to see him tonight. So that tells a lot about who he is and what he’s done for the community.”
Recognizing his long-standing contributions, the City of Knoxville honored Hicks by declaring July 28, 2024, as “Larry Hicks Day.” Reflecting on his departure, Hicks said, “I just can’t say enough about what a terrific group they are, how much fun it was to work with them. I know I’m going to miss them, but it’s time to leave.”
After decades in the world of music, both as an active trumpet player since the 7th grade and as a dedicated band director, Hicks is ready for the next phase of his life. The Knoxville Community Band and its members express deep gratitude for his unyielding commitment and inspiring leadership.
As the band takes a short break before their fall series, the search for Hicks’ successor has started. Whoever takes up the baton will undoubtedly have big shoes to fill.
