Knoxville Gears Up for Exciting Fall Semester with Seniors for Creative Learning
Knoxville is buzzing with excitement as the Seniors for Creative Learning (SCL) nonprofit organization gears up for another engaging fall semester. This volunteer-driven program is designed for individuals aged 50 and older, allowing them to explore new interests and experience educational opportunities tailored to their needs. With a blend of informal courses, lectures, and social activities, SCL aims to enrich the lives of seniors in the community.
Long-standing Tradition of Learning
SCL has been a part of the community for over 25 years. The organization was born out of a pressing need for senior students to access learning without the challenges of transportation to the University of Tennessee campus. Joe Clarke, President of SCL, shared how the organization has evolved by focusing on creating classes that resonate with their members.
Clarke emphasized the goal moving forward: “We want to grow our current membership base of 80-100 and ensure that we have the best local speakers who respond to what our members are interested in learning about.” This fall’s curriculum offers a wide variety of topics, making it accessible for everyone in the community.

Field Trips and Community Engagement
In addition to classroom learning, SCL organizes field trips to exciting destinations such as Knoxville’s Jewelry TV, Elkmont, and the Appalachian Clubhouse. These outings help members connect in a fun and engaging way while exploring their community.
The semester wraps up with a special luncheon celebration, giving participants a chance to reflect on their experiences over the past weeks.
Membership Details
To take part in these enriching experiences, members can join SCL for a fee of $40 per person or $65 for couples each semester, along with additional costs for specific field trips. Those interested in attending their first lecture for free can call (865) 974-0150 for more information.
Classes run from September 17 through October 31, with sessions scheduled on Tuesdays and Thursdays at the John T. O’Connor Center located at 611 Winona Street in Knoxville.
