The Angora Frog Farm and Dog Park Opens in Powell

Powell, Tennessee – A new community park, the Angora Frog Farm and Dog Park, opened on August 21,2024, inviting families and pet owners to enjoy a unique outdoor space dedicated to both children and their furry friends. This park is named after a story from the Brown family, who generously donated the 14 acres of land for the park back in 2020.

A Legacy of Family Folklore

The story of the Angora Frog Farm goes back several generations to when the Brown family was trying to name their farm. Initially wishing to call it “The Brown’s Farm,” they were informed that name was already taken. Legend has it, during a visit to a creek on their property, a family member decided to take a different path and name a resident bullfrog “Angora.” This cheeky act led to the park’s whimsical name, Angora Frog Farm.

A Park for Imagination and Play

The new park aims to spark imagination in young children. Partnering with illustrator and author Daniel Wiseman, Legacy Parks created a story trail that features the adventurous tale of Arvin the Angora Frog. Children can follow Arvin on his quest to find other frogs, with various play structures along the trail. Among these are The Lookout Tower, a spider swing, and a wobble bridge, offering opportunities for climbing and playing.

Carol Evans, the Executive Director of Legacy Parks, explained, “We took a different approach with this park by creating a linear playground where you can enjoy a walk in the woods, climb and play, read a story, and sit by a little creek all in one experience.” This innovative technique aims to combine nature, storytelling, and physical fun.

A Special Space for Dogs

In addition to the children’s area, the park also features a dedicated dog park. Randy Boyd, the President of the University of Tennessee and founder of PetSafe, highlighted the importance of this addition. He stated that the dog park was not just a gift but “a reward” for the Powell community’s involvement and care. This dog park represents the sixth community dog park in Knox County.

Community Efforts and Funding

The dog park was made possible thanks to funding from Boyd’s Family Foundation. The gas station company donated to help make a positive impact on the community. Besides, Legacy Parks received a total of $40,000 in grants—$20,000 from The American Rental Association Foundation and the Toro Company, and another $20,000 from FirstBank—to develop the walking trail and create storybook panels that can be found throughout the park.

A Lasting Impact

According to Evans, “This park is a special place for the community, children, frogs, and dogs. It is a privilege for us to be able to create a unique park in this community and honor the Brown family legacy that will last for generations to come.”

Park Access and Information

The Angora Frog Farm and Dog Park is now open to the public from sunrise to sunset. It is conveniently located at 7323 Brickyard Road in Powell, making it easily accessible for local families looking for a new spot to spend time outdoors.

This park not only pays homage to the Brown family’s history but also serves as a new hub for community activities, ensuring a fun and imaginative experience for both kids and pets alike.
