News Summary

Former Notre Dame High School basketball star Bob Brown has been honored with induction into the Tennessee Sports Hall of Fame. The emotional recognition highlights his significant contributions to basketball during his high school and collegiate years, as well as his influence in education. The induction ceremony will take place at the Omni Nashville Hotel, further cementing Brown’s legacy in the sports community of Tennessee.

Chattanooga – Former Notre Dame High School standout Bob Brown has been named to the Tennessee Sports Hall of Fame, with the induction ceremony set for July 19 at the Omni Nashville Hotel. The recognition, which caught Brown off guard, left him emotional, as he wept for several minutes upon receiving the news.

Growing up in East Ridge, Tennessee, after relocating from Detroit with his mother, Dolores, and brother, Billy, Brown developed an innate passion for basketball. The family resided in a duplex on Dalewood Circle, where Brown honed his skills on an outdoor court every morning at 6 a.m. His childhood home featured miniature hoops in various rooms, a testament to the Brown brothers’ dedication to the game.

Influenced by their mother, who emphasized the importance of education and instilled a strong work ethic, both brothers were encouraged to strive for excellence. Early in his high school career, Brown stood at 5-foot-10 but experienced a growth spurt that propelled him to nearly 6-foot-8 by the end of his sophomore year. To adapt to his increasing height, Brown undertook extensive training, engaging in jump rope exercises and ball-handling drills multiple times a day.

Under coach Jim Phifer, basketball transformed from a mere pastime to a serious aspiration for Brown during his high school years. In his senior season, he distinguished himself by setting a TSSAA Small Class state semifinal scoring record with an impressive 42 points in a single game against Peabody. His performance helped lead Notre Dame High School on an impressive run, capturing district, region, and substate titles and earning its inaugural trip to the state tournament.

In an iconic substate game, Brown and a teammate orchestrated a stunning comeback, overcoming a six-point deficit to secure a double-digit victory. His remarkable high school performance garnered attention from several colleges, including ETSU and Georgia, leading Brown to choose East Tennessee State University (ETSU) for his collegiate basketball career.

At ETSU, Brown demonstrated his exceptional talent, averaging 17 points and 11.2 rebounds per game during his junior year while boasting an impressive 66.1% field-goal percentage. Notably, he is the sole player in ETSU history to maintain a double-double average for an entire season. His stellar performances included a 30-point game against UTC and a 22-point, 20-rebound game against Appalachian State.

After concluding his collegiate career, Brown continued to shine as an international basketball star, averaging 38 points and 17 rebounds while playing professionally in Belgium. Upon returning to the United States, he dedicated the next 44 years to education, spending 19 years as a high school teacher in Hamilton County, including tenures at several institutions, notably Daniel Boone High School.

Although Brown’s athletic accomplishments are substantial, he ranks his most meaningful achievement as providing care for an ETSU teammate’s mother during her illness, viewing this experience as more significant than his sports accolades. His legacy extends beyond the basketball court; he is already a member of the Notre Dame High School Sports Hall of Fame, the Greater Chattanooga Sports Hall of Fame, and the European Basketball Hall of Fame.

The upcoming induction into the Tennessee Sports Hall of Fame further solidifies Brown’s status as a celebrated figure in the world of sports, acknowledging his contributions to basketball both locally and internationally.
