Knoxville, TN – A fatal pedestrian crash occurred on North Broadway in Knoxville on Wednesday morning, resulting in the death of a 44-year-old man. The victim has been identified as Michael Young, who was pronounced dead at the scene after being struck by a southbound Chevy SUV around 10:30 a.m. on April 30, 2025.

The incident took place as Young was attempting to cross the street outside of a designated crosswalk. The driver of the vehicle remained at the scene following the accident, and no other individuals were reported injured.

In response to the collision, Knoxville Police Department (KPD) officers closed the section of Broadway between Atlantic Avenue and Chickamauga Avenue to ensure safety and facilitate an investigation. Crime scene technicians from KPD, along with personnel from the Medical Examiner’s Office, were dispatched to the scene to gather evidence. A special KPD crash reconstruction team is currently engaged in an ongoing investigation to learn more about the circumstances surrounding the incident.

This tragic event marks the second pedestrian crash in the North Broadway area near Atlantic Avenue this month. Earlier in April, an 8-year-old child suffered serious injuries after being hit by a vehicle in the same vicinity. This rising trend in pedestrian accidents has raised concerns among local residents and city officials regarding roadway safety.

In an effort to address pedestrian safety issues, Knoxville has been implementing its Vision Zero initiative. This comprehensive program aims to reduce pedestrian deaths and improve overall roadway safety across the city. With a budget of approximately $14 million, the initiative plans to fund updates that include the construction of new sidewalks and the introduction of traffic calming measures.

Local residents have expressed their concerns and suggested that additional crosswalks may be necessary to help prevent future accidents involving pedestrians. The community’s call for improved safety measures highlights the urgent need for comprehensive solutions to address the increasing number of incidents in the area.

As investigations continue, authorities are expected to examine the circumstances of the collision further and explore potential safety enhancements for pedestrians on North Broadway and elsewhere in Knoxville to ensure that similar tragedies do not occur in the future.
