Knoxville – The U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary Knoxville-First Flotilla will offer free Vessel Safety Examinations (VSC) for boaters at Concord Park on Saturday, May 17. The event will run from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. at the boat launch located at 10924 South Northshore Drive, Knoxville, TN 37922. The initiative is in partnership with the Knox County Parks & Recreation Department and aims to enhance safety for recreational boaters.

The free safety checks are available for personal pleasure craft, jet skis, and paddle crafts such as kayaks, canoes, and stand-up paddleboards. No prior appointment is necessary for participants to access this service; they can simply arrive at the designated location during the event hours. Importantly, there is no cost for the examination, and vessels that do not pass will face no penalties.

During the Vessel Safety Examination, volunteers will inspect a variety of safety equipment including navigation lights, life jackets, and other essential boating gear. Boats that meet all safety requirements will be awarded a VSC decal, which serves as confirmation of compliance with Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency standards. This decal may also provide third-party benefits, and it’s recommended that boaters check with their insurance providers for specifics regarding any potential discounts or advantages.

Boating safety education is a primary goal of this initiative. The Coast Guard Auxiliary encourages boaters to take advantage of various programs offered by the Auxiliary and the U.S. Power Squadron, which are designed to promote safe boating practices and awareness.
