Emotional Goodbyes in Knoxville: Five Knox County Commissioners Depart

Knoxville, Tennessee – In an emotional farewell last week, five Knox County Commissioners bid goodbye to their colleagues and the community during their final meeting together. The gathering was filled with heartfelt sentiments, as the commissioners reflected on their time in office and the bonds they formed over the years.

The meeting, which was not originally scheduled for goodbyes, turned into a memorable occasion as departing commissioners Dasha Lundy, Carson Dailey, John Schoonmaker, Richie Beeler, and Kyle Ward shared their feelings with the remaining members and attendees. Each commissioner stood out in their own unique way, showcasing the diverse backgrounds and perspectives they brought to the commission.

Honoring Durability and Service

Carson Dailey, who represented South Knox District 9 for two terms, received a pleasant surprise from Knoxville Vice Mayor Tommy Smith. Smith, who serves the same area on the city council, labeled them as “co-caretakers” of the district. Despite having some differences in opinions over the years, Smith noted that they continuously supported each other.

As part of the tribute, Smith presented Dailey with a sign found on a county road right-of-way. The sign served as a symbol of Dailey’s dedication to keeping the community clean, having advocated for trash pickup and efforts against illegal dumping.

Emotionally Charged Departures

As the meeting progressed, each of the departing commissioners had the opportunity to address their colleagues. Richie Beeler, a minister by profession, took a moment to express his gratitude. “I am grateful for all of you,” Beeler said, praising each of his colleagues for their contributions. Lundy was recognized as a community warrior, while Schoonmaker and Dailey received high praise for their service. Beeler also described Kyle Ward as “a great friend and a brother from day one.”

In her farewell, Lundy expressed her deep appreciation: “I love you all,” she said. “I’m very grateful to sit in this seat and grateful to be here.” Ward, while speaking briefly, acknowledged the diverse talents and gifts each commissioner brought to the table, emphasizing that despite disagreements, they had formed a family-like bond.

Reflections on Service

John Schoonmaker, who served for over nine years, reflected on his journey with nostalgia. He shared that attending every commission meeting was a highlight, attributing his gratitude to former Knox County Commissioner Charles Busler. “This is the best job I ever had. I wish the next group has as much fun as I had,” Schoonmaker remarked cheerfully.

Dailey, reminding everyone of their commitment to the community, stated, “All my votes have been for the best of Knox County.” He also emphasized the importance of leaving differences at the door after meetings, demonstrating a spirit of collaboration that defined their time together.

A Look Back at Challenges

KnoX County Chairwoman Terry Hill, who also announced she won’t seek her position again, took the opportunity to recap significant challenges faced over the past four years. She mentioned events such as a tornado, a major snowstorm, and the passing of important resolutions like the Advance Knoxville initiative, as well as managing the ambulance contract.

Overall, the farewell highlighted a sense of unity and respect among the commissioners as they wrapped up their terms. They not only celebrated their accomplishments but also the friendships and memories created throughout their tenure.

As Knoxville looks to the future, the emotional farewells of these five commissioners remind the community of the dedication and hard work that go into public service.
