He was a dedicated law enforcement officer who served for more than 20 years with the Knoxville Police Department (KPD) and was honored as a veteran of the Desert Storm campaign while serving in the U.S. Air Force.

Rickman’s career was marked by bravery as he survived two separate on-duty shootings, incidents that not only tested his physical endurance but also highlighted his commitment to public safety. The first shooting occurred on July 11, 2001, when Rickman was shot in the chest during a routine traffic stop for a broken taillight. Despite the traumatic event, he recovered and returned to duty. The second incident happened on May 20, 2008, when he was responding to a burglary alarm and was shot multiple times by a suspect. This second encounter with violence also required months of rehabilitation, yet Rickman again proved his resilience by re-entering the force after healing. The suspect involved in the 2008 shooting received a 40-year prison sentence for his actions.

Throughout his career, Rickman demonstrated his unwavering dedication to his duties, earning respect within the community and recognition from his peers. He was awarded the title of 1982 Airman of the Year for the Military Airlift Command, showcasing his commitment to excellence both in military service and law enforcement.

Following the memorial, a formal service will begin at 7 PM. Further honoring his memory, Rickman’s entombment is planned for August 1, 2025, at Berry Highland South Cemetery.
