Knoxville – A serious vehicle crash occurred on Tuesday night at the intersection of Tazewell Pike and East Emory Road, resulting in one person being rescued from their vehicle with significant injuries. The incident was reported by Rural Metro Fire at approximately 8:45 p.m. Two vehicles were involved in the crash, and the injured individual was transported to a trauma care center in what appeared to be serious condition.
Emergency responders from Rural Metro Fire attended the scene, where images showed them huddled around the passenger side of a white truck. The exact details regarding the cause of the wreck and the identities of those involved are currently being determined, and updated information will be provided as it becomes available.
Rural Metro Fire took the opportunity to remind drivers about the importance of exercising caution at intersections, which are known to be critical points for vehicular collisions. The crash on Tazewell Pike and East Emory Road highlights the necessity of slowing down and being vigilant in these high-risk areas.
This crash comes in the wake of another tragic incident that occurred on May 4 on Millertown Pike, where Jacob Donovan Saunders-Lashley, a 25-year-old resident of Corryton, was killed in a head-on collision. The crash, which took place around 10:20 p.m., involved 20-year-old Mason Shumate, who has since been charged with vehicular homicide by intoxication.
Witnesses at the scene reported seeing Shumate’s vehicle repeatedly cross the double yellow line before the impact. Both drivers received assistance from bystanders, but unfortunately, Saunders-Lashley was pronounced dead at the scene. Shumate exhibited signs of intoxication, including slurred speech and a strong smell of alcohol. Following the crash, he was taken to the University of Tennessee Medical Center for treatment before being booked into jail.
After the collision, Shumate declined to participate in a sobriety test and did not respond to questions after being informed of his rights. As of now, he remains in the Knox County jail as he awaits a bond hearing regarding the charges against him.
The recent uptick in serious vehicular incidents, including the one at Tazewell Pike and East Emory Road, underscores the critical need for road safety awareness. With intersections being common sites for car crashes, authorities are urging drivers to remain alert and comply with traffic signals and regulations. Encouraging safe driving practices is essential in reducing the number of accidents and ensuring the safety of all road users.
While investigations into both incidents continue, community members are left to reflect on the importance of caution while driving, especially in areas known for frequent collisions. Responsibility on the road can greatly contribute to preventing tragic outcomes and ensuring the welfare of all individuals in the Knoxville area.
