Residents find comfort in Knoxville's warming centers as temperatures drop.
As temperatures in Knoxville are set to drop to 25 degrees, the city has opened warming centers to provide refuge for residents. From January 21st, when over 387 people sought shelter, locals can access warming services with free rides offered by Knoxville Area Transit. Despite some centers temporarily closing for repairs, others are accommodating increased guests, and donations are being welcomed to support those in need. Volunteer opportunities are also available to help ensure the safety and comfort of individuals during this cold season.
As the chilly winds blow into Knoxville, residents are gearing up for some serious cold weather with temperatures dipping to a brisk 25 degrees or below! From Wednesday to Friday, locals will have the chance to find refuge at warming centers strategically opened across the city. It’s a heartwarming initiative aimed at serving those in need when the temperatures plummet.
This season has already seen a whirlwind of activity, with warming centers having been open for a total of 26 nights. The busiest night so far? January 21st, when a whopping 387 individuals found a safe, warm place to stay. It goes to show just how important these centers are in the community, especially when the cold intensifies.
To make it even easier for those needing warmth, the Knoxville Area Transit (KAT) is offering free rides to warming centers for anyone requesting a ride after 3 p.m. It’s a fantastic way to ensure everyone can access these critical services. All it takes is a quick chat with the bus driver to secure a warm trip!
However, not all centers will be available this week. Vestal United Methodist Church and Magnolia United Methodist Church are temporarily closing their doors due to necessary repairs and maintenance upgrades. With the closure of these two warming spots, other locations will find themselves welcoming more guests than usual, and everyone is stepping up to accommodate the increase.
For those relying on transportation, it’s worth noting that many transportation agencies do not operate late into the night. Although there have been efforts in the past to use rideshare services like Uber for those needing to reach warming centers, drivers sometimes cancel rides upon discovering the destination. Thankfully, the KAT service is here to help at least until the evening.
So, where can folks go to warm up? Current warming center locations include:
And, here’s some good news: pets are allowed at these warming centers! Plus, no formal ID or background checks are required to gain entry, making it easier for everyone to access the warmth they need.
As temperatures drop, resource centers across Knoxville are making a call for donations. They are seeking essential items such as sleeping bags, hats, toothbrushes, toothpaste, blankets, gloves, deodorant, socks, body wash, and shampoo. Every little bit helps and can make a big difference to those experiencing the harsh conditions.
The Knoxville-Knox County Office of Housing Stability is actively coordinating volunteers to assist in providing meals, arranging rides, checking guests in, and even staying overnight at the centers. It’s a collective effort to make sure everyone has someone looking after them as temperatures plunge.
Warming center hours are set to remain normal after January 13th, with centers typically closing between 8 and 9:30 p.m. each night. Coast through the rest of January with these resources at your fingertips, and let’s keep our Knoxville community warm and welcoming during this chilly season!
