News Summary

The third annual West Knox Pride in Knoxville, Tennessee concluded Pride Month with a vibrant celebration, featuring over 150 vendors and various activities that emphasize community and support for LGBTQ+ rights. Participants included couples renewing vows and enjoying interactive events, highlighting the importance of acceptance in today’s political climate. The event underscores the resilience and unity within the LGBTQ+ community, amidst challenges such as the closure of local support venues and ongoing advocacy for equality.

Knoxville, Tennessee – The third annual West Knox Pride took place recently, marking a lively conclusion to Pride Month with a vibrant celebration of inclusivity and love. This significant event featured over 150 vendors, including Rocky Top Weddings, which provided attendees with opportunities for vow renewals, commitment pledges, and marriage services. The gathering emphasized the importance of community and acceptance, particularly in the existing political climate surrounding LGBTQ+ rights.

Anthony Cespedes, the owner of Rocky Top Weddings, attended West Knox Pride for the first time. He underscored the principle that “love is love,” affirming that everyone deserves the right to marry. The event included a wedding chapel complete with a decorative wedding arch and dining tables arranged like pews, creating an inviting atmosphere for commitment ceremonies.

Among the participants were Devin Winchester and Xander Rice-Winchester, a couple who pledged their commitment to each other during the festivities. Together for six years, they have six children and six grandchildren, with another grandchild due soon. Reflecting on their journey, the couple expressed their appreciation for the legalization of gay marriage, recalling past uncertainties regarding their marriage rights. They emphasized the importance of building community awareness and presence, particularly in light of challenges faced by the LGBTQ+ community today. They plan to return to West Knox Pride next year to finalize their marriage.

As current political challenges continue to surface under the Trump Administration, the couple remains vigilant in their efforts to advocate for equality and LGBTQ+ rights. Cespedes has expressed hope in returning to the event next year to conduct more ceremonies, emphasizing the ongoing need for such gatherings.

Event Highlights

SoKno Pride was another key feature of the celebration, lighting up Sevier Avenue and evolving from a grassroots gathering to a prominent Pride Month event. The schedule included various activities such as drag shows, live music performances, morning yoga sessions, and a 5K fun run, contributing to a neighborhood block party atmosphere highly appreciated by attendees.

Club XYZ, a dedicated space for the LGBTQIA+ community in Knoxville, celebrated its 20th anniversary during the weekend festivities. This milestone marked a significant achievement in providing a safe haven for members of the community.

Challenges and Support

Despite the success of the event, the LGBTQ+ community in Knoxville is also facing challenges. South Press Cafe, recognized as a vital hub for the local LGBTQ+ scene, announced its closure after five years of operation due to rising costs. This cafe hosted numerous community events, including open mic nights and drag shows, fostering connections within the community.

Additionally, Knox Pride’s food pantry was grappling with financial difficulties until a TikTok influencer highlighted the organization’s needs. This attention resulted in a surge of donations, allowing the organization to raise sufficient funds to cover two months of rent for their community center, coinciding with an important food donation drive.

Community Impact

The success of West Knox Pride reflects a growing spirit of resilience and unity within the LGBTQ+ community amid ongoing struggles for rights and recognition. While concerns about future rights remain, events like West Knox Pride foster hope, celebration, and a commitment to equality. Through continued engagement and visibility, Knoxville’s LGBTQ+ community is rallying to ensure it remains a strong and supportive presence in the face of adversity.
