Knoxville – The YWCA Knoxville & the Tennessee Valley is celebrating its centenary with a significant renovation grant aimed at improving the Nancy J. Land Center, which has been a cornerstone of support for women in the community for almost 100 years. Recently, the organization received a $1.5 million grant from the State of Tennessee, designated specifically for upgrading the aging building and expanding the impactful Jenny Boyd Keys of Hope Women’s Program.
The downtown YWCA, located at 420 W. Clinch Ave, first opened its doors in November 1925. Over the decades, it has housed nearly 200 women seeking sanctuary and support. Initially, the organization began in a former doctor’s house that limited accommodation to just 15 women. With its rich history, the YWCA has evolved into one of the oldest organizations in the region since its inception in 1899.
The renovation project is part of the Keys of Hope Capital Campaign, which has been in development for about a decade. Serious conversations around the campaign began in 2015, with a feasibility study completed a year later. The official campaign launch took place in 2019, and by April 2023, it successfully crossed its final threshold with the state grant. This project marks a turning point for the YWCA, as the building has aged and needs major overhauls to electrical, plumbing, mechanical systems, and ADA accessibility improvements.
The Jenny Boyd Keys of Hope Women’s Program, which provides housing for women affected by crises such as domestic violence and homelessness, initially accommodated 58 residents. Post-renovation, an anticipated 20% increase in capacity is expected, demonstrating the program’s commitment to addressing community needs. The program has achieved a remarkable 90% success rate, helping women reenter the workforce, secure permanent housing, and achieve self-sufficiency.
The yearlong renovation is currently at its halfway point, with staff continuing to operate under active construction conditions. Elements of historical significance, such as museum-grade moulding and a grand chandelier on the first floor, are still visible and appreciated by visitors. The renovation efforts aim to preserve the character of the building, including restoring unique architectural features like the circular stairwell.
Upgrades to the YWCA will include new common areas and facilities designed to enhance the support framework for residents and the broader community. These spaces will feature meeting and therapy rooms, a conference room, dining areas, and a clothing boutique. Furthermore, the former gymnasium will transform into an open space for community events and activities, while the half-basement will offer fitness classes and a gym area known as Club W.
Although the renovation will not initially restore the previously open indoor pool, plans for future restoration are in consideration. Living quarters for residents will be updated to showcase modern facilities, including working sinks, vanities, desks, and enhanced climate control through modern outlets. The renovation will also greatly improve laundry accessibility, transitioning from a single communal unit to several facilities on each floor.
As YWCA Knoxville prepares for the gradual reopening later in 2023, staff will establish new operational systems and security measures to ensure the safety and well-being of residents. The organization prioritizes comprehensive wraparound services such as workforce development, financial literacy, and assistance with navigating complex systems, reinforcing its mission to serve women experiencing crises. The YWCA Knoxville & East Tennessee is committed to evolving and meeting community needs for the next 100 years.
