KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — Knoxville gets two dry, unusually warm days to start the week, including a pleasant Election Day, before a storm system crossing the country brings a soaking round of rain on Wednesday.
Sunday’s light showers were expected to fade overnight. Monday starts with stubborn morning clouds that should break up by afternoon, and highs climb into the low to mid 70s, which is above normal for early November.
Tuesday looks even better for anyone heading to the polls. Expect a mix of sun and clouds, a southerly breeze and highs in the upper 70s. Clouds build Tuesday night, with the low holding near 58 degrees.
The change comes from an intensifying storm moving into the Plains on Monday, where it is producing strong winds, heavy rain and scattered severe storms. That system tracks east through Missouri and Arkansas on Tuesday and reaches East Tennessee by midweek.
For Wednesday the National Weather Service forecast calls for a chance of showers early, then showers likely later in the day, with a high near 75. The best chance for meaningful rainfall comes later Wednesday into Wednesday night. A thunderstorm or two is possible, but the severe threat looks very low, and any flooding should be limited to an isolated spot. Gusty winds could also develop over the higher elevations of the Smokies and the foothills.
The rain should clear out fast on Thursday, with most of the area dry by midday, and dry weather carries into the weekend. Temperatures ease back toward seasonable levels by Saturday and Sunday.
