Four dedicated educators from East Tennessee remembered for their impact.

KNOXVILLE – In a heartfelt tribute to the dedicated educators of East Tennessee, the community mourns the loss of four influential teachers who touched the lives of many students and families. Debbie, Rodney Kiser, Peggy Sue Reed, and Judith “Judye” Sauls Hollingsworth each left an indelible mark through their years of service in education, bringing a wealth of knowledge, love, and support to their students.

Debbie, a beloved figure in education, passed away recently, leaving behind her husband, daughters, and a future granddaughter. Her experience of 39 years included a focus on special education and second-grade teaching, highlighting her commitment to nurturing young minds. Throughout her tenure, Debbie worked at several East Tennessee schools, including Roane County Schools, Knox City Schools, and Knox County Schools, culminating as an intervention mentor with the RTI program. Known for her warm baking skills, Debbie often crafted beautiful birthday cakes from scratch and was renowned for her sense of humor and selfless nature, impacting many along the way. Family and friends will gather on July 2 at Berry Highland Memorial in Knoxville for visitation, with a funeral service to follow. A graveside service will occur the next day.

Rodney Kiser, aged 57, passed on February 5, 2025, surrounded by his family. A devoted husband and father, Rodney built a legacy of love and dedication, often noted for his selflessness. In his 27 years in education, primarily teaching fourth grade, he continued to inspire students even as he battled cancer. An accomplished individual with skills ranging from autobody work to home remodeling and martial arts, he held a 6th-degree black belt. Rodney’s commitment to mentoring children through coaching and life lessons defined his additional roles in the community. Friends and family are scheduled to remember him on February 16, 2025, at Salem Baptist Church, with a Celebration of Life service to honor his contributions.

Peggy Sue Reed, age 78, passed away on April 24, 2025, at UTMC Palliative Care after a life filled with compassion and dedication. Originally from Mississippi, Peggy earned her Bachelor’s in Elementary Education from William Carey University and dedicated 20 years to Blue Grass Elementary in Knoxville, where her personalized teaching approach significantly benefited her students. Active in her community, she engaged in church services and music programs. Peggy is survived by her husband, children, and grandchildren, with a memorial service set for May 17, 2025, at Central Baptist Church of Bearden. In lieu of flowers, donations are requested for the church.

Judith “Judye” Sauls Hollingsworth, who faced a battle with Alzheimer’s, passed away on October 7, 2024. Remembered fondly as a music teacher across various Knoxville elementary schools, Judye’s passion for music and community made her a cherished figure. After her passing, she leaves behind step-sons, grandchildren, and a beloved sister. Friends may pay their respects on October 13, followed by a memorial service at Berry Funeral Home, where donations to Alzheimer’s Tennessee are suggested in her memory.

These four remarkable educators were more than just teachers; they were mentors, supporters, and community members who dedicated their lives to shaping the future of countless children in East Tennessee. Their contributions, characterized by love, humor, and unwavering support, continue to resonate within the community.
