The neighborhood's late-19th and early-20th century houses have largely been subdivided into student apartments given the adjacent UT campus; Fort Sanders Regional Medical Center is a major institutional anchor. Cumberland Avenue's 'Vol Walk' corridor carries UT's off-campus bar, restaurant, and retail scene.
History
Known as West End for decades, the neighborhood takes its modern name from Fort Sanders, a Union earthwork fortification whose successful defense on November 29, 1863 repelled a Confederate assault during the Knoxville Campaign, a turning point preserved in National Park Service historical documentation.
