History
Originally part of the independent City of North Knoxville (annexed 1897), the neighborhood was developed 1880-1934 as a streetcar suburb for Knoxville's professional class. Decline after WWII and the construction of I-40 was reversed starting in the late 1960s/1970s by the Fourth & Gill Neighborhood Association; the district was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1985.
