Knoxville Woman Honors Late Brother by Raising $50,000 for Lymphoma Research

A Knoxville woman is honoring her late brother by raising funds for lymphoma research with a goal of $50,000. Deb Applegate’s fundraising efforts come as a response to the painful loss of her brother, Jason, affectionately known as Jakey, who passed away from the disease.

Jakey was born on May 19, the same day as their mother’s 21st birthday, and was known for his happy, spry, and mischievous personality that brought joy to his family. Tragically, he was misdiagnosed with mumps at the age of three, ultimately leading to a later diagnosis of lymphoma. After undergoing treatments for two years, Jakey’s weakened immune system collapsed when he contracted chickenpox in February 1976, which ultimately took his life.

Applegate expressed that the loss of Jakey remains a deep-seated heartache for her family, particularly during moments meant to celebrate his birthday. In her dedication to his memory, Applegate is competing for the title of Visionary of the Year with the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, using this opportunity to raise awareness and funds for critical research and to support families affected by blood cancers.

Her commitment to this cause has also facilitated healing within her family. Following Applegate’s initiative to honor Jakey’s memory, their father visited Jakey’s grave for the first time in February, a significant step in their familial healing journey.

According to the American Cancer Society, it is projected that over 89,000 people will be diagnosed with lymphoma in the U.S. this year alone, with an estimated 20,000 fatalities expected. Applegate highlighted the painful reality of losing a loved one to cancer, emphasizing her family’s intention for Jakey’s death to serve a greater purpose.

To support her fundraising efforts, Applegate is collaborating with local businesses and is hosting events like ‘Cruise for a Cause,’ scheduled for May 31 from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Hole in the Wall Cafe in Oak Ridge. Individuals who are unable to attend the event will also have the option to make donations online, ensuring everyone can contribute to the cause.

The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society is dedicated to improving treatments and support services for patients and families impacted by blood cancers. Through her efforts, Applegate hopes to catalyze change in the research landscape while fostering a supportive community for those affected by lymphoma.
